Description

I needed a new style for MaxiMutt.
This is not it.
But I need to know what's wrong with it.
Punky says that the eyes are too big.

I don't want them to look like furries, but I don't want them to look like anything else I've done. I feel like my cartoons are too goofy looking to be taken seriously.
MaxiMutt NEEDS to be taken seriously.
This is not right.

I need help.

I'll help you out. If him looking cartoony is what your trying to avoid then here:

Negative: His eyes should be a tad bit smaller, his neck should be shorter, and his haunches should be bigger. If you need a reference image just look at a real dog and try to shape that anatomy to your liking. His right ear looks like it's floating a bit, it should be brought down to his face a bit more, and if he's perking them up, then more them upwards a bit. To be a bit more in tune with the expression on his face his tail should be brought down more, because he looks a bit scared and confused; which that being said, his right arm should be in a position similar to his left, unless he's clutching something. I feel like for this sketch his mouth should be closed, but even so you didn't screw up the mouth, so it doesn't bother me that much. The last thing that bothered me is his left cheek is a bit bigger then his right, and a bit more upward and brought out (aka puffy).

Positive: His paws look great. The claws are all on point. The cape looks good too. I like what you did for the eyes, they look really nice. The tag on his collar is nice too ^^. What I really love about him is his facial expression and how you make it (almost) fit with the position he's in. For me he looks almost.. Sad, or scared. It just blends in with everything and stirs up a bunch of questions, like; what's going on? (Which is really good! If someone can make a story from this little sketch then its good) Pretty much in summary for positive I like what you did, he looks like a dog, his form is great (besides what I mentioned in negative, which really isn't alot, I just put it into great detail ) and I like the character. He's adorable

Summary: If you don't want him to look like your other art (as you described 'goofy') I would recommend using a dog picture as reference to his body parts. He's a good character though, and I love him: he's adorable! Good job.
